Hainan Provincial Museum is the only comprehensive museum of local history and art in Hainan Province. In 2012, it was declared as a national first-class museum. Its predecessor was the Hainan Museum, which began to be built in 1984. In 1990, the Hainan Provincial Government formally approved the establishment of the "Hainan Provincial Museum". In 1996, the Hainan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology was established, and the two co-located.

The first phase of the Hainan Provincial Museum was completed and opened on November 15, 2008, and the second phase was fully opened on May 18, 2017. The total area of the museum area is 44500 square meters, the exhibition hall area is about 12000 square meters, the underground reservoir area is about 9300 square meters, and the collection of cultural relics is about 25000 pieces (sets).

Since its opening in 2008, the Hainan Provincial Museum has successfully held more than 320 exhibitions and received more than 560 million visitors from all walks of life. in particular, it has successfully received 200 important guests from more than a dozen countries and regions around the world, which has been widely praised by all walks of life. Because of its unique shape and rich exhibitions, the Hainan Provincial Museum has become a landmark building and a beautiful cultural landscape in Haikou, the provincial capital, and even the whole province. It has attracted many Chinese and foreign tourists and made positive contributions to the cultural construction of Hainan International Tourism Island.

Since the opening of the museum, the Hainan Provincial Museum has not only introduced "National Treasure-China National Museum Collection Exhibition", "Dragon Journey to the End of the World-Sichuan Zigong Jurassic Dinosaur Exhibition", "Supreme National Ceremony-International Friendship Museum Collection Exhibition", "Human Nature and Love Li Zijian Oil Painting in the New Century Tour Exhibition", "Sea Trade Treasures-Qing Dynasty Guangzhou Export Art Exhibition", "Huaiyang Mo Yun-Nanjing Museum Collection Exhibition of Eight Moneys, etc, he also created a series of boutique exhibitions, especially" The Direction of the Sea-Huaguang Reef No. 1 Shipwreck Special Exhibition ", which won the 10th National Museum's Top Ten Exhibition Awards, and was exhibited in the Capital Museum, Zhejiang Provincial Museum, Henan Museum, More than a dozen large museums including Shanxi Museum have toured exhibitions, which are well received by the audience.

At present, the Hainan Provincial Museum has solemnly launched a large-scale series of exhibitions of "Nanming Qidian", which is based on the "Nanming Qidian Fu" written by Qiu Jun, a talented Hainan scholar in the Ming Dynasty, it is composed of three basic exhibitions, such as "Nanming Pan Ge-South China Sea Marine Civilization Exhibition", "Fangwai Enclosed Xinjiang-Hainan History Exhibition", "Between Xianfan-Hainan Customs Exhibition", and special exhibitions such as "Hainan Huanghua Pear", "Hainan Agarwood", "Art of Earth Fire-Fine Ceramics Collection Exhibition" and "Intangible Heritage Four Ones" Qiong Workshop, Qiongyao Street, Qiongya Village and Qiong Stage, multi-level, all-round display of the local cultural charm of Hainan.
